Choosing the RIGHT Photographer
Choosing a photographer can feel daunting! Each professional photographer offers a unique editing style, different approaches to posing, and their own specialty area. Google “family photographer near me” and you’ll find pages and pages of talented photographers to choose from.
So where do you begin??
Here are a couple insider tips for finding the right photographer for your family.
SPOILER -- It may not be me. And that's totally ok : )
1. Determine YOUR Style
In order to find a perfect photographer match, you need to first consider what STYLE of photography appeals to you.
- Are you drawn to a light & airy look? Maybe darker & moodier? Bold colors?
- Do you like candid images or everyone smiling at the camera?
- Do you want someone that works in a studio or shoots outside?
Look at Pinterest boards, Facebook, Instagram and different photographers' websites to get a feel for available options.
Learn what YOU like before you go further on in your search.
2. Ask For Recommendations
Ask your friends and family if they recommend a photographer they have used in the past. Facebook groups can be a great resource too. Be sure to get details on their experience and WHY they feel their photographer is a good choice for you.
Ask to see examples of the photos!
Your friend may like something different than you (which is ok!) so make sure to look at the style of photos they received.
3. Photographer Research
As you begin to form a short list of photographers, do some online investigation. Make sure they cater to YOUR specific photography needs (family, senior, wedding, etc.). If you are looking for a quick mini session, is that something they offer? If you have kids, does the photographer work with kids of a similar age group?
Check their portfolio (website) and their social media presence (Instagram, Facebook).
Do you like what you see?
Read some of their recent captions on social media. Does their voice sound like someone you could connect with?
Look for posted reviews. What are others saying?
4. Contact Your Favorites
Reach out!
You may not be able to find everything you want to know online. But you’re sure to get more information on packages, availability, etc. if you contact your top photographer candidates directly.
Most professional photographers should have information they can quickly email you or may even offer to jump on a call to discuss dates, answer questions, and talk about how to book.
5. Book The Session!
If you’ve found someone whose work you love and they feel like a personality match, go ahead and book that session!
Many photographers' calendars tend to fill a couple of months in advance (especially as fall approaches or if you require a weekend), so be sure to plan ahead.
The online booking process used by most photographers these days takes just a couple of minutes and you will have crossed that baby off the list!
