It’s a year full of celebration — college acceptance letters, cap & gown fittings, prom.
But there is also a quiet ache that sneaks up on you during the simplest moments. One day you're packing lunches, the next you're watching the final band concert or walking in to that final football game.
For parents of high school seniors, it feels like a season of lasts.
And while the big moments are certainly worth celebrating, it’s often the small, ordinary ones that stick in your heart. The sound of their laugh across the house. The way they still toss their backpack in the same spot. The sleepy smiles on early mornings.
So how do you CELEBRATE and LET GO at the same time??
This year will fly by faster than you think. Between college tours, senior events, and graduation prep, it’s easy to overlook the tiny little details.
And THOSE are the things we end up missing the most.
- That smirk she's had since she was seven.
- The way he carried a ball everywhere he went.
- The confidence (or quiet nerves) that lived just beneath the surface.
These are the pieces you don’t want to forget.
The emotional side of senior year is real. And it’s okay to feel all of it. You can expect to be proud, excited, overwhelmed, and completely heartbroken all at once.
So how do you balance making the most of this year while preparing to let them go?
- Make time for a "date" — just the two of you, phones down, even if it’s just burgers and fries, or a walk around the neighborhood.
- Take a spontaneous day trip, even if they groan about it at first (they’ll remember it more than you think).
- Rewatch a favorite movie from their childhood.
- Plan a senior “bucket list” of tiny things you want to do together before they graduate.
The time you have left at home with them? It matters. And it doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive -- just intentional.
It’s easy to feel like this season is a long goodbye — but it’s not the end.
The truth is, all these “lasts” you’re noticing? They’re also signs of just how far your child has come. You’ve raised someone kind, resilient, funny, driven… or all of the above. And while it’s okay to grieve the end of childhood, DO NOT forget to celebrate the incredible adult they’re becoming.
You may be moving into a new chapter, but you’re not losing them. Your relationship will just look a little different. So...
- Absorb every last football game & dinner date.
- Soak up the Sunday mornings & hallway laughs.
- TAKE THE PICTURES... ALLLLL THE PICTURES!!
But also — get excited 🎉
The next phase is the version you’ve been helping build for 18 years.
