By far, the biggest question asked before a photo session is “what should we wear?!?” And it’s no wonder! Your photos are an investment. It is understandable that you want to look your best!
I have pulled together a few tips that I’m hoping will help you feel less overwhelmed when planning outfits for your next session. Keep in mind, these are JUST IDEAS! You certainly do not need to implement all of these... or any of them!
The most important thing is that your photos are a reflection of YOU! But if you’re feeling stuck, or need some inspiration, then perhaps these ideas will help : )
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
* First, consider your background: Be mindful of the season & your session location. Wearing green in spring or orange to the pumpkin patch will make it hard for YOU to stand out.
* Second, think about your home: What colors are inside your house? If you plan to print and display your family photos (and you definitely should!), consider matching the colors within in your home. Instant art!
AND NOW FOR THE PLANNING : )
1. Begin with ONE outfit.
I usually recommend that mom decide on her outfit first, and then build from there. Find something that makes you feel beautiful. Be comfortable and confident, and it will show in front of the camera!
Say YES to the dress! Don’t be afraid to dress up! Long dresses or skirts with movement add an extra touch of elegance and photograph beautifully. Plus they are so flattering! This is true for all the girls…
Add a statement accessory or two for a finishing touch. Simple jewelry, a scarf or sweater can add texture and color to your photos.
2. Choose your color palette
Strive for two or three core colors in your overall palette. Once you have your main clothing piece selected, pull one or two colors (or neutrals) that directly match that core piece. Alternatively, choose one or two accent colors to build out your palette for the rest of the family. This could be variations of the same color (ex. dark gray, light gray, white) or colors that complement one another (ex. navy, mustard, maroon).
For example, say mom is wearing a skirt in the floral print below. The rest of the family could dress in light neutral colors so she is the star. They could also pick solid colors that match the pattern exactly (rose and emerald). Or you could choose something entirely different, but still complementary, to the pattern (ex. indigo/denim or a dark red).
Tons of options with one base piece!!
TIP: You’ll want to avoid bright, neon colors that may cast unfavorable shades on the skin.
3. Add patterns, textures and layers
Including one or two clothing items with a pattern is a great way to add interest to your photos. Maybe mom has a floral dress OR son wears a plaid shirt. Less is more. All other pieces should be solid. But solid doesn’t mean boring! Make your wardrobe interesting with cool textures (lace, ruffles, etc.) or layer with a sweater, vest or scarf.
Add suspenders or cute bow for the little ones and you're done!
TIP: Avoid large logos or graphics that can distract or date an otherwise timeless photo.
4. Comfort is KEY!
Plan and shop early. Try your clothing on well ahead of the session to make sure everything fits and everyone is comfortable – especially the kids! This will save a lot of headaches come picture day. The last thing you want is to hear “this sweater is so itchy!” during the entire session. Work all that out in advance. (But not too far since kids can grow 3 sizes overnight sometimes : ))
5. How matchy is too matchy?
There is an idea floating around that everyone in the picture needs to match… like perfectly match. This is NOT true! It’s important to choose colors that look nice together, but please don’t feel that you need to be wearing the exact same outfit or color. Coordinating is better than matching. Your photos will be far more interesting with a little variation. Plus, the same outfit is not flattering on everyBODY. Your goal should be to make everyone look & feel great!
6. Make it your own! And ask for help.
Again, this session is about YOU. Let your family’s personality show : )
Lastly, don't be shy about asking for help. I am happy to discuss any and all wardrobe ideas as you plan your upcoming session. Feel free to text me photos or send questions at any time.
